Dubai is booming. In 2008, it was reported that 2 million people live in an area no more than 4,000 km² and it’s expected to increase with a yearly population growth of ~8%. To understand the enormous space problem in this country, compare this: In Austria (the home of Agru) are currently 8 million inhabitants living in an area 20 times bigger than Dubai.
With seemingly endless ongoing construction projects, infrastructure in Dubai has yet to catch up to the growing population demand.
From 2006 to 2009 in the Middle East, a massive project was undertaken to reduce traffic, pollution and reliance on cars—the only form of transport in the city. The project included a 76km, fully-automatic metro rail system. The issue of traffic and pollution, largely caused by business and tourism was solved by September of 2009 when the first 52km of the Metro Red Line, a rail system that goes partially underground and on elevated viaducts – was finished.
About the Project
- 7.5 km PE pipes (dimensions: 110, 125, 160, 200, 225, 250 and 280mm)
- Fittings (tees, bends, reduced parts, etc.)
- FM 1613 approved components
- Installation of AGRU FM piping components
Safety within the Metro depots is ensured by a fire protection system equipped with Agru Austria pipes made out of polyethylene (PE). The piping system was delivered by Agru’s sales partner BMC Gulf, who received an order from the subcontractor Build Force. Additionally, BMC Gulf was asked to supply the appropriate welding machines and to take care of the project supervision at the construction site. Fully automated CNC machines with data recording from WIDOS were selected. For the installation, certified welders (accredited to the DVGW standard GW 330) from the SKZ Training Centre UAE were employed.
Why was Agru PE used?
Only FM 1613 listed piping components class 175 from Agru were installed to guarantee high quality and safety. These were installed at train depots, where trains are parked or undergoing maintenance, to provide water for fire fighting. Compared to other materials, an Agru FM-listed PE plastic system was chosen because it provides:
- Corrosion resistance
- Easy installation
- No need for maintenance
