Our WA facility recently fabricated a settlement tank entirely from polypropylene (PP) plastic. We’d like to provide a simple explanation of what settlement tanks are, the materials we used and our fabrication expertise.
What’s a settlement tank?
Settlement tanks use gravity and drag forces to separate solids and/or oils from a fluid. A wide array of industrial processes use this method. The mining, wastewater treatment, biological sciences and even wine making industries use settlement tanks (also known as sediment tanks) as a means of reducing fluid turbidity (cloudiness).
Above: Diagram showing the function of a settlement tank.
Polypropylene (PP) is resistant to a large variety of chemical solvents, bases and acids. Items fabricated from PP make them corrosion resistant and capable of withstanding the rigours of industry.
So what about strength? PP is very strong and impact resistant. In our settlement tank we used a product called Paneltim to provide further reinforcement and rigidity. Paneltim is a class of product commonly referred to as a sandwich panel. Sandwich panels contain internal air gaps, making the overall weight of this settlement tank light and easy to transport if necessary, while being extremely rigid and able to hold considerable liquid volume with ease.
In Australia the two primary providers of sandwich panels are Jenso with Paneltim sheets and Simona with Twin-Wall Sheet. Internally, there are slight differences between these two products; illustrated below.
As shown above, the Paneltim Sheet contains an internal grid, whereas the Twin-Wall Sheet has an internal column structure.
