Coogee Chemicals undertook a significant expansion project for their Chlor Alkali Plant in Kemerton, Western Australia, aimed at increasing their production capacity.
Founded to meet the growing demand within the local titanium dioxide pigment sector, Coogee Chemicals specialises in supplying essential bulk Chlorine and Caustic Soda feedstock.
The company launched its first facility in Kemerton in 1988, designed to support a new titanium dioxide pigment factory in the Kemerton Industrial Park, near Bunbury. This chlor-alkali facility, equipped with German-engineered Lurgi monopolar membrane cells, produces Chlorine and Caustic Soda through the electrolysis of pure brine. Further details about the plant are available on the Coogee Chemicals website.
Fusion was contracted by Coogee Chemicals to provide piping systems installation services based on client-supplied designs. A team was mobilised in nearby Bunbury to execute the project, which presented challenges due to extensive work at heights, as well as the fabrication of pipe spools and manifolds at our Bibra Lake facility. These were then mounted onto large steel frames, provided by the client, and transported to the site for efficient installation.
At our Bibra Lake Plastic Fabrication facility, large steel frames fitted with GRP (glass reinforced plastic) were delivered, enabling our team to pre-spool large bore CPVC Schedule 80 piping and attach them to the frames. These frames were designed for direct connection to other components at the Chlor Alkali plant. Three main steel frames were fabricated in this manner, delivered to the site, and installed with the help of our site services team and other contractors.
Our site team primarily used solvent cement to join UPVC and CPVC Schedule 80 piping systems throughout the plant, facilitating the connection between various chemical manufacturing processes. Additionally, large bore HDPE (PE100) SDR11 piping was butt-welded by our team as required within the project.
Fusion comprises two divisions: Fabrication and Wholesaling. The Fabrication division includes engineering and project management staff, in-house plastic fabricators, and our site services team, who collectively possess extensive knowledge and resources to install a variety of industrial plastic piping systems, ensuring their long-term performance. Renowned across Australia, our fabrication division specialises in custom-fabricated chemical tanks, chemical dosing panels, and pipe spooling. Fusion's site services team holds certifications in working at heights, confined space entry, flange management, PVC gluing, electrofusion, extrusion, IR, and butt welding. Meanwhile, Fusion's wholesale division imports and stocks premium plastic piping system products, including UPVC, CPVC Schedule 80 pipe and fittings, Asahi valves, and accessories, supporting aggressive chemical conveyance and storage. The synergy between our fabrication and wholesaling divisions enables us to swiftly procure the necessary parts for site services projects and in-house fabrication tasks at competitive prices.
Fusion has a longstanding relationship with Coogee Chemicals, having provided piping system installation services at various plants across Australia. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Coogee Chemicals once again and look forward to continuing our partnership.
